  1. We are still battling this issue, mid-June 2017. Our workaround is costly, but very effective. Insert a blank key in the USB port of the Windows 10 machine. Then it will always work.

  2. For reference, in Windows Server 2012 R2 I found the Event Source was “Winlogon” and the Event ID was “6003”. Maybe there are better solutions, but this worked for me.

  3. In 2012r2 I don’t see the Winlogon 6003 event. What I do see is in the Microsoft-Windows-RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS/Operations log. Source of RemoteDesktopServices-RdpCoreTS and event ID 131. Using that for the event to start the service works.

  4. Dan,
If you insert a key in the Windows box, and then end up having to walk away, a “Disconnect “ will end up dropping the service.
I haven’t found a workaround for this. Still an issue 3 years after you brought this up.

  5. I have been having a similar issue with smart card on Mac, using Microsoft Remote Desktop Client. THIS HAS BEEN RESOLVED.

To resolve the issue, without any special fixes . . . Here is exactly what I did.

    1. Download the latest Microsoft Remote Desktop 10 app from the Mac App Store.
    2. Configure your remote desktop as you would normally do. But before you save…
DO THE FOLLOWING >>> CLICK THE Devices & Audio Button/Tab
    >>>>> Next to Redirect: CHECK THE BOX FOR “SMART CARDS”
    3. Save your configuration, and connect. Like magic, no more smart card errors! 🙂
